Notes About Hiking the Touch-Me-Not Trail

 TRAIL
The trail is 7.23 miles (one-way) or 14.46 miles (round-trip). Most hikers park one car at Alder Lake, and another car at the Beech Hill Road Parking Area. This works when you are hiking with 2 or more people and cars. Most hikers like to hike it from east-to-west. But, both directions are good.

If you are hiking solo, the 14-1/2 mile hike may be more then you want to do in one day. In that case, you can break the hike up into two days. Most people choose to camp at Big Pond, which offers free camping. In the summer months it can become quite busy. The other option is to camp at Little Pond Campgrounds, which cost money, but has amenities, like bathrooms and showers.

Most of the trail is fairly easy hiking. The exception is the hike up the east side of Cabot Mountain. There, the climb is a moderate hike. You can expect to see numerous fern glades along this trail. Some are quite large and beautiful. Most hikers like the views of Big Pond where the trail runs right next to the pond. I would really consider Big Pond a lake instead of a pond. On a nice day the view is exceptional. There is also one view point on the east side of Cabot Mountain. Unfortunately, the view is fairly overgrown. Hopefully it will be cut back in the future.

Water can be an issue if you are not paying attention. There is a water source at the Alder Lake end. There is a stream within 50' of the trailhead on Cross Mountain Road. The next water source is at Big Pond. From Big Pond to Beecher Road there are NO water sources. If you are staying at Little pond, there is a potable water source at the large parking area at the trailhead to the Campground Trail. There is a water source near Beecher Road, but it can dry up.

 CAMPSITES
There are three good places to camp: (1) Alder Lake; (2) Big Pond; (3) Little Pond. You can also camp off the trail. You need to camp 150 feet away from a road, trail, or water source. There are NO DEC lean-to on this trail.

ALDER LAKE - Is 45 acres with a depth of 20 feet. Good fishing for trout. Has 10 major camping locations around the lake, and 3 minor locations part way up the DEC access road to Alder Lake. It is located at the eastern trailhead of the Touch-Me-Not Trail, and might be a good choice if you plan on arriving at later in the afternoon. Camping there is free and there are NO reservations. It is first-come-first-serve. Multiple tents can camp at one location. There are NO amenities. Black Bears can be a problem if food is left out. You need to properly hang your food from a tree.

BIG POND - Is 51 acres with a depth of 60 feet. Excellent fishing for trout. Has 10 major camping locations around the lake. It is located on Barkaboom Road, which is about half way through the Touch-Me-Not Trail. Like Alder Lake, this is a popular camping location. Camping there is free and there are NO reservations. It is first-come-first-serve. Multiple tents can camp at one location. There are NO amenities. Black Bears can be a problem if food is left out. You need to properly hang your food from a tree.

LITTLE POND CAMPGROUNDS - is 17 acres. Has 75 individual camping sites around the lake. It is located off Barkaboom Road (south of Big Pond), which is about half way through the Touch-Me-Not Trail. Like Alder Lake, this is a popular camping location. Camping there is reasonable priced and reservations are required (see Little Pond link). There are amenities.

 PARKING
There are basically three places to park: (1) Alder Lake; (2) Big Pond; (3) Beech Hill Road. ALDER LAKE - Finding the entrance to the Alder Lake is not marked, nor are there any signs denoting that the trailhead to the Touch-Me-Not Trail. The entrance to Alder Lake is basically at the end of the dirt Cross Mountain Road, and the paved Alder Road (CR 54). There is also Old Edwards Road at the intersection of Cross Mountain Road and Alder Road. Most hikers are just outside the entrance to Alder Lake, but off Cross Mountain Road.

In the winter months Cross Mountain Road is NOT plowed. But, Alder Road is plowed. You may be able to park on Alder Road if you want to cross country ski. We are not aware of the DEC plowing the Alder Lake Access Road and/or Parking Area. If they do, then park in the Alder Lake Parking Area.

BIG POND - Finding the parking areas is easy. Finding a space to park can be challenging on a summer weekend. Big Pond is located on Barkaboom Road.

In the winter months Cross Mountain Road is NOT plowed. But, Alder Road is plowed. You may be able to park on Alder Road if you want to cross country ski. We are not aware of the DEC plowing the Touch-Me-Not Trail Parking Area. If they do, then park in the Touch-Me-Not Trail Parking Area.

BEECH HILL ROAD - There is limited spaces to here here. There is NO official DEC parking area. But, you can park on the grass near the DEC Registration Box. Not a popular place to park.

 OTHER INFORMATION
There is limited cell phone service in some parts of the region (as of 2023).

Beware of yellow-jacket bees on the east side of Cabot Mountain. They nest in the ground, and have entrance holes of 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 inches in diameter. You will often see 1 or 2 guard bees around the hole, and other bees going in-and-out of the hole. If you encounter one, walk gentle on the ground past them. Stomping on the ground will cause them to come out and sting you. They are most active in late summer and September. By Mid-October they will die.
