Notes About Mongaup Pond

 TRAIL
This is not an official trail. The ramp down to the bridge is very good. The bridge is no longer capable of handling cars, so the dirt piles have been put on top of the bridge. Hunter Road is still listed as a road, but is no longer used or maintained. The walk up the side of Mongaup Creek does not have an established trail. But, still easy to walk on. The best view of Mongaup Falls is from the south side. You many be tempted to approach it from the north side, but the views are not good, and it is much more dangerous.

The area around Mongaup Falls is dangerous, and you should use caution in walking near the falls. If the water is raging after a rain storm, you should keep your distance from the edge of Mongaup Creek.

 PARKING
While most people are not aware of this waterfall, enough people do know about it. Parking directly off Mongaup Road is the shortest distance. The Frick Pond Parking Area holds about 10-15 cars, and it is about 4/10 of a mile away. There are a couple parking places just before the booth to Mongaup Pond Campgrounds.

 OTHER INFORMATION
There is limited cell phone service in some parts of the region (as of 2023).

You can climb down next to the creek when the water level is normal.

In the summer months, the Mongaup Creek may slow down more then what you see in the picture.

NOTICE: Waterfalls are the most dangerous place in the forest. Most injuries and deaths in the Catskill Mountains happen around waterfalls. If there has been a major rain storm, the dangers are significantly higher.
